Light

Let it in!

This is a photo I took of an incredible lantern at Misty Bar in Melbourne. It's amazing the affect light has. It can act as a filter through which we view a physical space. In bars especially, the way it falls often highlights 'the pretty' and obscures the not-so-pretty.

You can see the impact of light on both the mood and aesthetic of a room if you have ever been at a club until closing and they turn the lights on to get people out. What seemed like a dark, sultry, glamorous evening with a hundred friendly, fashionable strangers quickly turns into a grimy, bare, empty room with a sticky carpet populated by a bunch of slightly stale, drunken lunatics.

But light can be beautiful and warm. In film and photography it is the key to capturing meaningful images. On the set of the last film I worked on, achieving the perfect lighting set-ups were vital. Whenever we shot at dawn or sunset, we were often 'chasing the light'. Trying to capture that perfect moment where the sun shone just right...

Mood: scorched almonds and happiness
